Del Mar Lifeguards
The City of Del Mar operates a well-regarded Lifeguard Service staffed by highly skilled permanent and seasonal lifeguards who patrol and oversee the City’s coastline. The department averages 1,400 water-related rescues and 1,100 medical aids per year. It operates 24/7 cliff, swift water and scuba rescue teams; enforces health and safety regulations; offers a Junior Lifeguard Program and handles many other routine and emergency functions.
Over many years, FOP support has helped position the Del Mar Lifeguard Service at the leading edge of its field and helped the lifeguards keep our beaches safe and enjoyable for all.
Currently, FOP supports Lifeguard programs and services, including community outreach, the New Zealand Lifeguard Exchange and Disabled Veterans Program. It presents two annual events open to the public: the Penguin Plunge and Lifeguard Dance.
Over the past several years, FOP has funded the purchase of:
Customized rescue boats enabling lifeguards to perform surf rescues. This boat is utilized in 200-300 of the average 1,400 annual rescues. Watch video>>

Beach-ready wheelchairs ensuring access to the Del Mar beach for all visitors. The sand wheelchairs at the 17th and 25th Street lifeguard towers are available year-round on a first-come, first-serve basis.
