Powerhouse restrooms set for renovation

By Bianca Kaplanek, The Coast News

DEL MAR — Beachgoers and visitors to Powerhouse Community Center will soon have a cleaner place to clean up after council members at the Jan. 19 meeting awarded a construction contract to rehabilitate the public restrooms at the oceanfront facility.

The Richards Group’s $132,160 proposal was the lower of two bids submitted when the project was advertised late last year.

Norse Corporation submitted a bid for $175,000. Contracting laws allow the city to award the contract to the lowest responsive bidder, which in this case is The Richards Group.

Download press release

FB_IMG_1452447105903Del Mar, CA … Proving that many of the best things in life are free – and really fun! –on January 1, 2016, more than 2,000 people, most attired in bathing suits or shorts and t-shirts (no wetsuits allowed), some sporting holiday hats and costumes, joyfully dove into what has become a cherished New Year’s Day tradition: the Del Mar Lifeguard Penguin Plunge.

As the 11 am start to this 30th annual event approached, the record crowd jumped up and down in anticipation (and to keep warm in the 50-something-degrees, with a chillier water temperature) at Del Mar Beach as Chief Lifeguard Pat Vergne conducted the countdown from the Beach Safety Center. Then, kids, adults, seniors and entire families took the Penguin Plunge. Amid laughter, high fives and squeals of delight, many splashed about and then dashed back to shore while intrepid swimmers enjoyed a brisk workout. Then everyone plunged into about 1,400 donuts and warm coffee from VG Donut & Bakery in Cardiff. The refreshments were made possible thanks to contributions from the Poseidon Restaurant and Del Mar Motel. (more…)

Del Mar native has missed just one of the city’s annual New Year’s Day swims

By Pam Kragen | Dec. 29, 2015

DEL MAR — Thirty years ago, the very first Penguin Plunge at Del Mar Beach drew just a handful of hearty swimmers for a brisk morning dip in honor of New Year’s Day. Among those Penguin pioneers in 1986 was Tensia Moriel Trejo, who returns to take the plunge again Friday for her 29th time.

“I tease people that I go to get my water blessing at the start of the year,” said Trejo, a Del Mar native who celebrated her 88th birthday in September. “Coming here is part of my life. I’ve been hitting the water here from a very young age.”
