February 2009 Casino Night

FRIENDS OF THE POWERHOUSE AND CITY OF DEL MAR LIFEGUARDS
HOST “PARTY FOR THE TOWER”
TO RAISE FUNDS FOR NEW LIFEGUARD HEADQUARTERS

December 12, 2008.  It was announced today by Co-Chairs Carmen Fernandez and Marla Engel that the Friends of the Powerhouse and the City of Del Mar Lifeguards are hosting the “Party for the Tower” on Saturday, February 7 at the Powerhouse Community Center. Proceeds from the event will be used for construction of the new Lifeguard Headquarters and Beach Safety Center at 17th Street.

“We were thrilled with the support of the community at our July event at En Fuego and we’re looking forward to another fun-filled event in February for a very worthwhile cause,” said Fernandez.

The event will start at 5:00pm and dress is casual. There will be casino style games including a spin-to-win wheel, black jack, craps, roulette and others, as well as a fortune teller and magician.  Dinner by Jake’s Del Mar will be served at food stations, and there will be dancing to the tunes of Java.  A complimentary drink will start the evening, followed by a no-host bar. A raffle and live auction will follow the dinner and include items such as travel packages.    Complimentary parking for the event will be offered at the King Lot and Del Mar Train Station across the street from the Powerhouse Community Center.

“The new Lifeguard Headquarters is close to becoming a reality and we’re pleased to be partnering with the City of Del Mar on this worthwhile project that will benefit the entire community,” said Engel.

Tickets are available for this year’s event by contacting Friends of the Powerhouse at (858) 755-1641. Tickets are limited and are $60 each or $100 for two people. Tickets are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The Friends of the Powerhouse was formed in 1997 to work with the City of Del Mar to preserve the Powerhouse building on Coast Boulevard.  After several years of fundraising, the building was upgraded and transformed into the Powerhouse Community Center that exists today.

Following that the Friends raised money for and worked with the City of Del Mar to construct the Tot Lot, located at the southern tip of Powerhouse Park.  The Friends of the Powerhouse has also raised money for and funded various other beach-related projects including the beach-ready wheelchairs and for continued maintenance and preservation of the Powerhouse Community Center.
